founders of Theatre for change galway

Theatre for Change Galway emerged from the shared vision and support of the ALa committee, with crucial funding from Donal Walsh, Galway VEC, and Riona Hughes of NUIG Societies. Since its inception in 2010, the group has been a hub for engaging and empowering Theatre of the Oppressed workshops, guided by the expertise of esteemed facilitators from across the globe. The commitment of everyone involved goes beyond the stage, actively fostering human rights and education, and sparking a movement for positive change within the community.

Over the years, the organization has attracted world-class facilitators, such as Julian Boal, Sanjoy Ganguly, Andrew Jackson, Gavin Crichton and Jose Soeiro to lead training courses, amplifying its reach and impact. Its collaborations have brought global perspectives to local settings, integrating methods learned from training experiences in India, Greece, and Turkey.

Key highlights of their journey include contributing to university curricula, like the BA Youth & Family Studies at the University of Galway, and engaging in projects that intersect theatre with research, such as those at the University of Limerick. Through these initiatives, Theatre for Change Galway has not only entertained but educated, opening dialogues on ethnicity, social justice, and more.

With each workshop, performance, and course, Theatre for Change Galway weaves a rich history that continues to empower individuals and communities, championing the idea that change begins with the courage to step into another’s shoes and the willingness to raise one’s voice.
